Todd Phillips’ , featuring Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr., also had an impressive open despite landing into second place. Box Office Breakdown: Saw Franchise Ends with a Win

Saw 3D

The Saw franchise, which has been churning out annual entries since kicking off in 2004, introduced a new twist to the latest October entry. That visual element, plus a calendar shift, helped Saw 3D take first place over the holiday weekend.

Despite the $22.5 million debut, Saw 3D – the seventh and final film in the series – didn’t exactly end the series with a bloody bang. The horror flick had the fifth-best open in the entire franchise -- and that's including the higher ticket prices. (Only the 2004 original and 2009’s Saw VI – which was pitted directly against Paranormal Activity – did worse.)

Matt Damon Gets Tender With Keira Knightley

Matt DamonMatt Damon is set to star in a new period drama alongside Keira Knightley.

The star - who already has three movies in the pipeline this year - has reportedly been offered a role in the movie adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic Tender Is the Night, even though no director has been chosen yet by 20th Century Fox.

The 39-year-old actor would play a talented young doctor called Dick Diver who lives on the French Riviera in the 1920s with his wife Nicole. The movie, which so far has only a script written by David Nicchols, tells the tale of Dick as he goes through life, weighing up different issues in his mind such as his wife’s wealth.

The female lead has been offered to British actress Keira, who is said to be keen to star with the American star. Matt recently admitted he has such a busy schedule this year he doesn’t plan on taking any time off:

“I want to direct someday and I can’t really pass up the chance to work with the people I’m getting to work with. I’ve worked with Paul Greengrass three times now, and Clint Eastwood twice, and five or six times, and the Cohen Brothers this month. As long as that keeps happening, I can’t see myself taking time off, unless the work dried up.”

Tender Is the Night does not yet have a release date.

Box Office Breakdown: How to Train Your Dragon Soars to #1

How to Train Your Dragon

Jay Baruchel may be dating a girl out of his league, but he’s now got a dragon under his command.

Friday’s premiere of had both Baruchel and Gerard Butler pulling double-duty over the weekend. The animated feature easily surpassed both Out of My League, Bounty Hunter and - most importantly - the reigning champ (Alice in Wonderland) to take the win with a $43.7 million take.

Unfortunately, even higher ticket prices couldn’t lift the 3-D feature past a previous Dreamworks entry. Last March, Monsters vs. Aliens towered over the competition with a $59.3 million bow.

Meanwhile, - the weekend’s only other new wide release - warmed up to a $14 million debut and a third-place finish.
